Fatimah Puteh joined Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) as an Assistant Lecturer (A) in 1987 and is now holding the post of Associate Professor and Manager of MyLinE at Language Academy, UTM.
She is very dedicated, hardworking and disciplined in delivering the duties. In her busy schedule managing the national portal, MyLinE (http://myline.utm.my), which is developed, hosted and maintained by UTM and is open to all registered students in all 20 public universities in the country, she always find time and spare her energy for the betterment of her teaching and improvement of student learning. Self-reflection and continuous enhancement and development of her teaching and learning (T&L) are her motto. She shouldered the responsibilities as the Coordinator of the TESL (Teaching of English as a Second Language) Programme in the university between 2002 and 2006. In her very busy schedule, her T&L continued to excel for during this period, she received T&L awards from her faculty for three consecutive years and her dedication to her profession earned her recognition letters from the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (A&A) of the university.
Her contribution to teaching and learning is not solely restricted to students in UTM as her knowledge and expertise are also appreciated and recognised by staff in the university, students and staff in other universities and even the professionals in the industries and fellow educators and pupils in schools. For her dedication to teaching and learning and her relentless contribution to the academia, she was awarded the university’s Teaching Award 2010.
Throughout her 26 years working experience in UTM, she constantly strive to improve the quality of her T&L through research, publication, paper presentation and involvement in related Teaching and Learning associations. Within the five years of managing MyLinE which also includes developing online materials for the portal, she has developed and secured 154 copyright of materials. She has also written 3 books related to T&L, edited a book on Computer Assisted Language Learning entitled CALL for Teachers and 10 book chapters. The sharing of her expertise in English language and her dedication to the integration of computer in T&L is not reaped by students and staff in UTM alone but it is extended to students and staff in other public universities and even the industries. The clarity of her enunciation whilst teaching, her dedication and expertise have earned her the trust and belief of those she trained. As such she is constantly given high ratings by them. In fact she is well respected for her dedication in applying IT in T&L in the university as well as at national level.
Based on her deep interest in CALL and her effort in realising the government‘s aspiration in ensuring that the younger generation is IT-savvy, she expanded her niche area through the university’s language learning portal, UTM Online Resources for learning in English to allow many more students to enjoy the fun, interactive and easy access to language learning resources. Playing one of the main roles in developing the portal, coupled with hardwork and cooperation, the Task Force headed by Fatimah Puteh earned the trust of the Ministry of Higher Education Malaysia when the portal which was first developed for UTM becomes a national portal, open to all registered students in all 20 public universities in Malaysia.
