Recently, Language Academy, UTM has just concluded two summer school programmes involving students from OPU (Osaka Prefecture University) and SIT (Shibaura Institute of Technology). The focus of the program was on oral communication for future professionals. As part of the summer school programme, 21 OPU students stayed in the UTM Skudai campus from 15 to 27 February 2016 followed by 25 SIT students who arrived a week later, i.e. from 20 February to 4 March, 2016. The OPU summer school program was assisted by 21 UTM students acting as local buddies while for the SIT program, 25 UTM students assisted the Japanese students during their stay here.

This summer school was an excellent opportunity for the Japanese students to learn and discover what it would be like to speak English every day.  In addition to language and culture classes, there were field trips to various locations across the campus, Johor Bahru city, and Malacca. The visits were designed to introduce the students to the Malaysian culture. These students were assigned to collect data and take photos during these visits for their oral presentation assignments. There were also 12 lecturers involved as instructors for both summer school programmes. There were also three staffs from the respective universities accompanying the students during their stay here. These staffs had actively observed the running of the program. From their observation, Prof. Masahiko Tachibana from SIT reported that students had benefited a lot from the activities of the summer school and they have gained more courage to communicate in English. Meanwhile, Ms Tomomi Kuribayashi, the liaison officer from OPU, expressed her satisfaction about the programme and hoped to send more students in the future summer school programme in UTM.

Overall, the Summer School had proven to be a valuable opportunity for the students from both universities to improve their English language proficiency and cross-cultural understanding. The program also enabled Japanese and Malaysian students of the same generation to get together, share experiences, engage in meaningful discussion and thus, strengthen ties in building bridges between the two nations. Throughout the programme the OPU and SIT students had valuable opportunities to explore the Malaysian values through their bonding with the local buddies.
